Pepene-Verde" Is the Romania word for "Watermelon." It was the best fruit I choose to eat when the weather is hot. Watermelon is more purchased, sweet and of the best quality in the summer. I did not find any in the store or market places for the my first 6 months here in Romania until Summer time.
The first time I saw it in a one store, I didn't believe my eyes. I went to different stores and they were in hundreds. I was really amazed of the fact that it's only in the summer that you can get Watermelon.Back home in Africa, you can find it in market places through out the year in Nigeria, Ghana, and Tog. Their taste are different sometimes due to the season.
Watermelon, not only a thirst quencher but also an excellent source of Vitamin C and a very good source of Vitamin A.
At the Camp in Prod, we ate many pieces of Watermelon in the afternoons before sport. The children and the youth like it more than anything else placed before them. It refreshes them and kill their thirst in the hot sunny weather.
No one as ever missed it, they always want more of it and talk about the subtly crunchy and also, dare to travel miles to the market to buy some for.
Shopping for Pepene-verde (watermelon) in an open market in Sighisoara. The cost is not much but the excitement and benefits derive from eating is nice.
Children at the camp asked for more piece and eat to their satisfaction.

Your watermelon looks delicious and much enjoyed. I like watermelon, too, but cantaloupe is my favorite summer fruit.
ReplyDeleteI like watermelon, but it does not like me. Watermelon and cucumbers act the same way on me - they upset my stomach.
ReplyDeleteI do love good cantaloupe and strawberries.
Welcome to my blog. I love meeting new bloggers when they comment/become followers.
God bless the work that you do.

Many years ago, when Romania was first trying to establish itself as a holiday venue, we took a family holiday there. The image of our two young children munching their way into a watermelon slice has stayed vividly with me. (Thanks for visiting my blog and signing up.)
ReplyDeleteA camp after my own heart. I could live off watermelon. Of course, I probably have to live in a bathroom in the Camp. Haha! Are they as expensive over there as they are in the states? Here where I live, they run about 6 dollars for a small one and as high as 15 for a large one. Needless to say, we don't buy many. We tried growing them, but too much sun and not enough water (I guess) killed them.
